GRAMMY-nominated singer/songwriter Adam Lambert recently visited The Recording Academy's headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Lambert discussed the making of his new album, The Original High, reuniting with Swedish producers Max Martin and Shellback and why he doesn't want to be defined by one genre of music, among other topics.
"I think defining yourself by a genre … can be limiting," said Lambert. "So with [The Original High] I went in there and the goal was more, 'Let's deliver something honest, let's deliver something emotional, let's deliver something that will connect with as many people as possible.'"
Lambert broke out in 2009 as the season eight runner-up on "American Idol." That same year he released his major label debut album, For Your Entertainment, which climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the Top 10 Martin-and-Shellback-produced hit "Whataya Want From Me." The track earned Lambert his first career GRAMMY nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance for 2010.
He topped the Billboard 200 with his sophomore effort, 2012's Trespassing, which featured collaborations with Dr. Luke, Bruno Mars, Nile Rodgers, and Pharrell Williams, among others. In 2014 Lambert joined Queen for their first official North American tour, serving as the frontman for the GRAMMY-nominated rock band.
Released on June 16, The Original High was co-produced by Martin — the 2014 GRAMMY Producer Of The Year, Non-Classical (Ariana Grande, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift) — and his GRAMMY-nominated producing partner Shellback. The album features 11 tracks, including "The Original High," "Ghost Town" and "Lucy" featuring Queen's Brian May.
Lambert will join Queen for select South American tour dates beginning Sept. 16 in Sao Paulo.
