A musical based on director Cameron Crowe's award-winning film Almost Famous is opening in San Diego in the fall.

The story of a high school journalist covering a rising rock band on tour for Rolling Stone, Almost Famous: The Musical will debut in Crowe's hometown, San Diego, at the Old Globe Theatre Sept. 13 and will run until Oct. 20. The musical is directed by Jeremy Herrin and features book and lyrics by Crowe, as well as music and lyrics by award-winning writer Tom Kitt.

The film is loosely based on Crowe's own life as a young music journalist in San Diego.

“So this will be the third time the story kind of comes back home," Crowe told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "The first is when it happened, the next is when we went back to film it. And now we bring the play back to the same neighborhood.”

The cast has not yet been announced, the San Diego-Union reports.
