Biography

"You can't base your life on other people's expectations."

  • Born May 13, 1950, in Saginaw, Michigan
  • Signed to Berry Gordy's Motown's Tamla label at age 11, Wonder scored his first Billboard Hot 100 hit at just 13 years old with "Fingertips." At the time, he was known as Little Stevie Wonder. As an adult, his seminal albums Talking Book and Innervisions charted in the Top 5, and Fullfillingness First Finale and Songs In The Key Of Life both reached No. 1.
  • In 1973 Wonder took home his first five GRAMMY Awards for Innervisions, which won Album Of The Year, along with additional GRAMMYs for "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" (Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male) and "Superstition" (Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male and Best Rhythm & Blues Song).
  • Wonder is one of only three artists in GRAMMY history to win Album Of The Year three times in his career. The others are Paul Simon and Frank Sinatra. He is also one of the top GRAMMY winners of all time with 25 awards.

  • In 1999 Wonder was honored as the MusiCares Person of the Year. Proceeds from the annual GRAMMY Week event provide essential support for MusiCares, which ensures music people have a place to turn in times of financial, medical, and personal need.
  • In 2015 Wonder was honored with the GRAMMY TV special "Stevie Wonder: Songs In The Key Of Life — An All-Star GRAMMY Salute," which featured tribute performances by Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Gary Clark Jr., and Wonder himself.
  • In 2009 Wonder became a United Nations Messenger of Peace.
