Cardi B has only released one album thus far in her career, but it was all she needed to snag a GRAMMY. Her 2018 LP, Invasion of Privacy, earned her the Best Rap Album trophy at the 61st GRAMMY Awards in 2019.
In this episode of GRAMMY Rewind, relive that unforgettable moment, as a visibly overwhelmed Cardi B makes her way to the stage with her husband, fellow rapper Offset, by her side. Clutching his hand out of nervousness, Cardi turned her jitters into her signature slightly off-color humor. "Maybe I should start smoking weed," she quipped.
But the bulk of Cardi's speech was an earnest "thank you" to everyone who'd worked on her Invasion of Privacy album: Her team, the artists who contributed verses to the track list and the people who supported her along the way.
Chief among those were her family, and most importantly, her daughter Kulture, who was born in July 2018 — just three months after Cardi dropped her debut album. Making the project coincided with her pregnancy in a way that left a lasting mark on the album-making experience, the rapper detailed from the GRAMMY stage.
"When I found out I was pregnant, my album was not complete. I had, like, three songs that I was for sure having," she said, recalling the challenges of the time. After acknowledging the featured artists on Invasion of Privacy, Cardi finished with a kudos to her beau. "You, husband, thank you. Seriously, because he was like, 'No, you're gonna do this album, girl. We're gonna have this baby and we're gonna make this album.'"
To date, Cardi B has received nine GRAMMY nominations, with her 2019 win marking her one victory so far. While she has yet to release a follow-up to Invasion of Privacy, Cardi's debut is considered to be one of the defining rap albums of her generation.
