On March 26 singer/songwriter/producer Charlie Puth released his song "Change" with legendary GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter James Taylor, calling for the world to accept love and change on "the day we know we're all the same." Born in 1991, Puth's first successes came from self-posted YouTube videos that went viral. His pure emotions and vocal tones pushed several tracks onto the Billboard Hot 100 and his 2016 album, Nine Track Mind, finally delivered a full-length to devoted fans. The upcoming album that the track "Change" will appear on is called Voicenotes, named after Apple's Voice Memo app that many songwriters rely on. Puth previously relied on it when he wrote and submitted a song demo for "See You Again" to the producers of Furious 7 for a tribute song to Paul Walker's character in the movie franchise. In its final form, hardened by Wiz Khalifa's rap, the song went to No. 1 and spent 12 non-consecutive weeks at that spot. Khalifa, Puth and "See You Again" were nominated at the 58th GRAMMY Awards for Song Of The Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written For Visual Media.
While few talents have a No. 1 hit before they turn 20, and still fewer achieve the lasting success of a true folk icon, the unlikely pairing of Puth and Taylor couldn't have come at a better time. We can be sure many will sympathize with the power of the song's outlook's simplicity — valuing love and treating all people as equals.
