Over the past five decades, "Jesus Christ Superstar" has enjoyed wild success in many iterations. In the latest episode of History Of, we take a look back at one its generations most inspiring and controvercial masterpieces.

The third-ever collaboration between Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, Jesus Christ Superstar was originally released in 1970 as a double-LP rock opera after the creative duo behind the project struggled to find support to bring it to the stage. On the success of the album, which was nominated for multiple GRAMMY awards including Album Of The Year, the project got picked up by Broadway, running 711 shows during the early 1970s.

Decades later, in 2018, the live concert version of "Jesus Christ Superstar" featuring John Legend, Sara Bareilles and Alice Cooper earned GRAMMY and Emmy nominations, bringing a fresh treatement of a timeless classic to a new audience.
