GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter Joe Cocker died Dec. 22 from lung cancer. He was 70. Born in Sheffield, England, Cocker rose to fame in 1968 with his hit cover of the Beatles' "With A Little Help From My Friends." In 1970 he released Mad Dogs & Englishmen, which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the Top 10 hit "The Letter." Mad Dogs & Englishmen garnered Cocker his first career GRAMMY nomination for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance, Male. He subsequently released a string of Top 40 hits throughout the '70s and '80s, including "Cry Me A River," "High Time We Went," "You Are So Beautiful," and "It's A Sin When You Love Somebody." In 1982 Cocker and Jennifer Warnes topped the Billboard Hot 100 with "Up Where We Belong," the theme from An Officer And A Gentleman. The song won an Oscar and garnered Cocker a GRAMMY for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
