An exceptionally pure anthem to ongoing struggles in recovery, it testifies to dealing with "waves I can't control" by "learning how to build a better boat." The lyric suggests anguish and the inner pain is delivered with stark, haunting beauty. For Smith's part, an artist with enough nerve to tackle "Jolene" on 2003's tribute album to Dolly Parton, Just Because I'm A Woman, her performance on "Better Boat" showcases her silky harmony vocals.

Songs For The Saints' July 27 release date was announced on May 1 and in June, Chesney pledged all proceeds from it to help the Virgin Islands with recovery from September 2017's Hurricane Irma.
