Recently announced as the third judge for the reincarnation of "American Idol," it looks like Lionel Richie will bring another legend to the screen in the near future.
The GRAMMY winner has acquired the rights to soul-singing legend Curtis Mayfield's life story from the artist's estate, allowing him to bring a definitive biopic to the screen.
"It's time to celebrate and re-evaluate Curtis' legacy," said Altheida Mayfield, Curtis' widow. "For years, too many others have tried to claim what he alone did. He was a genius, always stood on his own."
While details about the biopic have yet to be announced, Richie expressed his delight at being able to represent one of his musical heroes.
"It's an honor for me to bring the life of one of my idols and friend to the screen," Richie said in a statement. "I'm so grateful to be working closely with Altheida Mayfield, Cheaa Mayfield [Curtis' son] and the Curtis Mayfield Estate and couldn't be happier to be moving forward on this amazing project about a one-of-a-kind music genius."
