U.K. singer Mahalia's latest album Love And Compromise is inspired by the legendary GRAMMY-nominated singer Eartha Kitt's words on romance. She was so inspired, in fact, that she named the album in honor of Kitt and features her words in her opening song '"Hide Out."

"Her words completely shaped me as a young woman in relationships," she told the Recording Academy at Austin City Limits. "I felt it was very important for me to include that clip and to include that piece of spoken word, because for me, her words inspired my whole adventure and navigation through love."

Mahalia stopped by to chat right after her set at ACL, her first time performing at the Texas music fest. "It's my first time in Texas in general so actually the whole thing has been an amazing experience," she said.

Watch the singer expand on how Earth Kitt shaped her, the challenges international artists face in the U.S., songwriting and more in the video above.
