It’s not every day that you play Lollapalooza let alone drop your debut full-length album, but for Josh Ostrander — who records under the moniker Mondo Cozmo — that's exactly what's happening.

The Philadelphia native took the Lollapalooza after-party stage at Schubas Tavern in Chicago for a sold-out crowd on Aug. 2 in advance of his festival performance on Aug. 4. In between this Lolla whirlwind, Ostrander is understandably excited for the release of Plastic Soul.

"Recording this record was special because it was the first time, I've come from a long line of being in a band and being in that brotherhood of recording with people, and this was the first time where I was by myself and I had to figure everything out," said Ostrander. 

If writing and recording the project weren't enough, Ostrander had to learn new instruments he never played prior to recording his album, all in a span of two weeks. 

"I had to play all of the instruments and I don't know how to play all of the instruments, I had to figure it out and be creative and think outside the box and use what I had," he said. "Honestly, I think it sounds really unique and I think that’s because I'm not really good at playing instruments.

"I tried to play some trumpet and stuff so I had to figure that out. I record everything in my house. I've got to give my neighbors a bottle of wine or something because I was just screaming into microphones and learning how to play instruments and it was a lesson in patience for them, I believe."

Besides creating the perfect songs for his debut, Ostrander had to set the perfect order, but all it took was one try.

"My track listing is kind of cool because I really wanted the record from front to back to really be like a wave almost," said Ostrander. "I sent the running order to my label and I was like, 'This is what I want to do.' And they were like, 'This isn’t right.' Forty-five minutes later they were like, 'This is great.' It’s really nice it starts out great and it just moves so well. I’m so proud of it."

As for the song that propelled the album?

"As soon as I finished the vocal on ["Shine"], I knew it was special. It was one of those moments — it’s like once in a lifetime." 

With a new album out today and a performance at Lollapalooza, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime day for Ostrander.
