"This course is among the first in the world to explore the underappreciated connections between jazz and hip-hop and combines historical and social perspectives with the opportunity to produce original music at the nexus of the two genres," said NYU.
"I couldn't be more excited to share with the students what I know and I look forward to them also teaching me," said Q-Tip. "Teaching is an exchange of sharing and receiving for all involved."
Nominated for 10 GRAMMY Awards based on his groundbreaking work with A Tribe Called Quest, as a solo artist and as a collaborator, Q-Tip won Best Dance Recording for his featured spot on the Chemical Brothers' "Galvanize" at the 48th GRAMMY Awards. He is also currently artistic director and advisor at large for the Kennedy Center's 2017–8 Hip Hop Culture Season.
Kahn is a visiting arts professor at NYU in music history. With 30 years in the industry, he spent a decade managing tours for major artists and has authored books and articles. He has been nominated for a Best Album Notes GRAMMY three times, including a win at the 57th GRAMMY Awards for Offering: Live At Temple University.
Class sessions will be split in two parts with Professor Kahn emphasizing readings and historic recordings and films, followed by Q-Tip mentoring the students on their own musical recording and composition assignments.
