Rock trailblazer Patti Smith has been named the latest recipient of the John Lennon Real Love Award. The folk rock icon will be honored at the 37th Annual John Lennon Tribute on Dec. 1 at Symphony Space in New York City.
Smith is scheduled to perform her own selections of Lennon and Beatles songs at the ceremony, which will also feature a performance of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in its entirety, according to Rolling Stone.
"Patti Smith is one of the truly great and important artists of her generation," said Yoko Ono of Smith's selection for the honor. "Patti's music, writing and social activism have inspired millions to care about the world more deeply and love more fully."
While this is the 37th Annual John Lennon Tribute, Smith is only the fourth person to receive the Real Love Award. Last year's recipient was folk singer/songwriter Donovan, the only other musician to have received the honor.
Proceeds from the event will go toward Gilda's Club, a community organization named after legendary actress and comedian Gilda Radner established to support those living with cancer. Gilda's Club in New York City hosts free workshops offered by Theatre Within.
Additional performers for the John Lennon Tribute will be announced on Lennon's birthday, Oct. 9th, and tickets, including VIP packages, go on sale Sept. 22 via the concert's website.
