Sir Paul McCartney is taking the city of New York by storm this month.

Tonight, Paul McCartney will play the first of two sold-out shows at Madison Square Garden. With two nights at Newark's Prudential Center already under his belt this week (Sept. 11 and 12) and pairs of shows at Brooklyn's Barclays Center (Sept. 19 and 21) and Long Island's NYCB LIVE at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (Sept. 27 and 27), he's covering a lot of ground.

So how does a legend get roped into this type of tour schedule? In an interview with Billboard, the former Beatle's long-time promoter Barrie Marshall revealed, "I always sit down with Paul to discuss what he'd like to do and where he'd like to play. He always comes up with great ideas and loves to try and do something a little different."

This particular 8-show arena run is the most ambitious of its kind in the New York area, and for McCartney, the 40-song sets including hits from the Beatles, Wings, and his solo albums, adding up to a three-hour performance.

"The brilliance of Paul's repertoire is unending," adds Marshall. "His concerts provide a special escape from the pressures of life and, in my experience, it's a musical journey which transcends all generations, and sees everyone who leaves each concert feeling joy, which endures long after the last notes are played."

The first show of this run was especially significant, as it took place on September 11, 16 years after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in 2001.

"We are against the oppression and prejudice and violence," McCartney said from stage that night, according to Rolling Stone. "We are for love and friendship and freedom," he said before displaying a "9/11 Never Forgotten" banner, along a U.S. flag, a U.K. flag and a rainbow flag.
