Representing Los Angeles' eclectic music scene and the top of the nation's echelon of higher arts education, the USC Thornton School of Music boasts top-notch programs in both classical and contemporary popular music. The school has recently added two new innovations that allow Southern Californians opportunities to see and hear the next generation of songwriters and musicians on campus.

On March 24, USC's Popular Music Program will open its first-ever venue designed specifically for songwriting. The 50-seat Songwriter's Theater will be unveiled with a reception and performances by USC students and alumni, including Maroon 5 collaborator Rozzi Crane. The intimate venue is fully equipped with instruments and aimed toward inviting people to "walk in and start performing," according to Chris Sampson, founding director of the Popular Music program.

On the classical side, USC's Classical Performance and Composition division has devised a clever option for drivers wishing to sidestep the hassle of L.A. drive-time traffic. Music@RushHour offers a free concert series, with free refreshments, at 5 p.m. on select Wednesdays at the school's Ramo Recital Hall. The March 22 installment featured jazz- and cabaret-inspired songs by Gershwin, Weill, Bolcom and more.
