As the coronavirus/COVID-19 pandemic continues to rock the music industry, GRAMMY.com reached out to a few musicians to see how they were spending their days indoors. Today, R&B singer J. BROWN shares his Quarantine Diary. His debut EP FOREVER YOURS is out now.
[8:15 a.m.] I’ve gotten in the habit of calming any anxiety or worries I may have by placing myself in "a meditative solitude". Before the sun reaches its scorching peak at high noon, I sit in a peaceful pose and turn within. This is how I protect my mental health in a time of continuous civil uproar, political turbulence and economic depression. With every meditative breath, I right my wrongs and gain serenity in knowing that all will turn out just fine.
[8:45 a.m.] By this time, I am ready to hit the kitchen to prepare my favorite meal of the day: breakfast. I’m not trying to be braggadocious, but I’m a self-taught chef in the making. On this particular day I whipped up a solid, full course breakfast. I washed it down with a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Just in case you’re wondering, this meal didn’t last more than five minutes on the plate.
[10:30 a.m.] After I’m centered and revived, I make sure to carve some time out to teach my “mini me” some new skills. I’m a hands-on type of dad and this kid right here is my little buddy; wherever I go, he goes. It’s only been three months of swimming lessons and he can do a mean flutter kick and cannonballs fearlessly on the deep end.
[11:50 a.m.] Before the pandemic hit, I was on the road a lot. With the world closed and no place to travel to, I caught up on a lot of house projects that I almost let fall to the wayside. On this particular day, I used my hefty fourteen foot ladder to climb on top of the shed and fixed some things up, J.Brown style, of course.
[1:15 pm] Self-proclaimed,“King of river rafting”. I enjoy the sport of river rafting, one of the many perks of living the Californian lifestyle. This lake is only a couple of miles from my home. I’m comfortable in the wilderness. Nature is my home.
[3:25 p.m.] An artist’s creativity never ceases. No matter what’s going on in the world, I make time to hit my home studio. Music is my passion and the driving force within my life. I've been super creative lately; creating new sounds and content for my fans.
[4:38 p.m.] Contemplating my next move. Should I remain in deep reflection or hit the gym? The clock is ticking and time waits for no man. A successful man can not operate in confusion and indecisiveness. It’s time to make a move.
[5:55 p.m.] This is certainly a real life princess in training. My daughter always brings joy to my life. For months she begged me for a pony and I finally succumbed to her daily requests. The princess always gets her way. No matter how I try, I just can’t say no. I love to see her happy. Her smile is incredibly contagious. She brightens up my day.
[6:36 p.m.] Back in the studio again! I couldn’t resist. When the lyrics flow in my head, I have to lay them on a track. Music is life. I live it. I breathe it. It’s inescapable.
[7:17 p.m.] I took a quick pit stop at the barbershop. Just thankful that my barber was able to fit me in. To maintain adequate social distancing, he only allows one client in his shop at a time. I’m excited to leave this five o’clock shadow behind and sharpen my lines.
[8:39 p.m.] This has been one hectic day. But, it's not over just yet. I had to pour a little coffee in my cup in preparation for two back to back virtual interviews. No complaints here. Keeping busy is a blessing.
