"Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" star Rachel Bloom visited The Recording Academy's headquarters in Santa Monica, Calif., to participate in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Bloom discussed combining her love of musical theater and sketch comedy, how emotional highs and lows inform the music on "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," and the making of "The Sexy Getting Ready Song," among other topics.
"We treat our show like a Broadway musical, so the music goes where the emotion is," said Bloom. "We really go, 'What are the emotional highs and lows of every episode?' and we start from there."
A Los Angeles native, Bloom studied musical theater and sketch comedy before developing a YouTube following for her pithy music videos. In 2013 she released two musical comedy albums, Please Love Me, which included the viral sensation, "F*** Me, Ray Bradbury," and Suck It, Christmas!!! (A Chanukah Album).
After seeing her videos online, writer/producer Aline Brosh McKenna worked with Bloom to develop and star in the TV musical comedy, "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend," which premiered on the CW Network in 2015. Bloom won a 2016 Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Comedy or Musical Golden Globe for her role as Rebecca Nora Bunch on "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend." The show has been renewed for a second season.
