With the unprecedented global disruption of 2020, it's important to support the music community however we can. With our brand-new series Record Store Recs, the Recording Academy checks in with vinyl-loving artists to learn more about their favorite record stores and the gems they've found there.

Experimental Canadian DJ/producer Patrick Holland has gained a steadily growing global following over recent years in the underground house scene with left-of-center releases under his aliases Project Pablo and Jump Source and with his own label Verdicchio Music Publishing. This year is the first time he's released music under his real name, dropping his third single for the project just last week, a moody, spacey cut called "Sinking Feeling." The track serves as the lead single for the first Patrick Holland EP, Simstim, due out May 1 on Verdicchio.

Based in Montreal, he's a great resource for the diverse and eclectic sounds coming out of the local underground scenes and the best record shops to go crate-digging. For this new series, Record Store Recs, Holland recommends his top shops, all of which you can shop online, as well as shares the latest record he scored and which new one he has his eyes on.

Can you tell us more about your favorite store from the bunch?
The shop I am closest to is La Rama. Just a few blocks from my house, it's on Bernard West. Run by Kris Guilty and Gene Tellem, two legendary DJs, the shop features a wide spread—yet meticulously curated—selection of modern music (primarily focused on independent imprints), classic staples, forgotten gold, and some of the city's latest dance music 12-inches. The shop functions as a hub for the music community.

They also host a number of events throughout the year; all-night raves, club gigs—and my favorite—the loft-inspired "Home" dance event (baby powder on the floor and all). Keen to support local artists, they're always the first to get in touch when I've got a new record on the way. Adding to the allure, master of the lathe Jackson Darby moved his Personal Touch Vinyl business into the La Rama basement and is now cutting small runs of vinyl for labels and bands. All this said, La Rama is a one stop shop and hangout for anyone passing by [after quarantine].

What's a record releasing soon that you've got your eye on?
