Most likely you're used to GRAMMY winner Sinéad O'Connor's GRAMMY-nominated, Prince-penned hit "Nothing Compares 2U" as an impassioned pop tune. But what if it was reimagined by a reggae band? Thanks to the Recording Academy's ReImagined series, you get to hear just that.
Filmed at The Village studios in Santa Monica, Calif., GRAMMY-nominated reggae band SOJA — comprising lead vocalist/guitarist Jacob Hemphill, bassist/vocalist Bobby Lee Jefferson, keyboardist Patrick O'Shea, drummer Ryan "Bird" Berty, percussionist Ken Brownell, saxophonist Hellman Escorcia, trumpeter Rafael Rodriguez, and guitarist/vocalist Trevor Young — have taken on Prince's classic turned hit by O'Connor, this time with a reggae flair.
"Nothing Compares 2U" earned four GRAMMY nominations for 1990, including nods for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. O'Connor's recording of the song was also a commercial success, topping the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1990, and earning platinum certification from the RIAA. It arguably remains O'Connor's best-known work.
SOJA, themselves two-time GRAMMY nominees, hail from Arlington, Va. The reggae band's 2014 album, Amid The Noise And Haste, peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200. Their latest album, Poetry In Motion, will be released Oct. 27.
