Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams & More Honor Fashion Visionary Karl Lagerfeld

Karl Lagerfeld, the oft wearer of sunglasses in and out of doors and a slicked-back pony that would eclipse that of even the most poised model on her way to a go-see, passed away last week, leaving us all in the wake of his tailored footsteps, at the age of 85.

Much like the classically simplistic and paradoxically show-stopping looks he creative directed for Chanel since 1983, the fashion icon had only a few requests for his remembrance post-earth: a single display of white roses in the largest window of the main Chanel store (with specifications on stem size and type of vase), a script for how employees should and should not respond to his loss ("it’s a hard time for all of us” made the cut) and, of course, no funeral, no pomp and circumstance, just a simple farewell (because who knows what people would show up wearing without his style and meticulous direction?).

Without question, Lagerfeld's love for fashion was as deeply intertwined to who he was as the tweed of a classic Chanel jacket. But what you may not know is that his love for music was just as strong as his love for fashion, as strong as the leather-and-chain combo attached to a vintage quilted lambskin Chanel bag (okay, I may have taken the analogy one step too far). This is evident, not only in the hottest hits compilation he released in partnership with Vogue, Les Musiques Que J'aime, but also in the certain “je ne sais quoi” he brought to his professional and personal relationships with celebrities who happen to be both musically and fashionably inclined. It’s present in the clothing he designed for Rihanna and Lady Gaga or the Jean-Roch music video he starred in with Snoop Dogg. In fact, Lagerfeld put his magic touch on many genres, from shooting an exclusive single cover for Florence + The Machine’s "Shake It Out," to directing the pontificator of happiness, Pharrell Williams, in a promo video for Chanel.

It’s no surprise then that when news of his passing was released from the Parisian fashion house that pop stars whose closets and artistry have benefited from the impact of Lagerfeld’s stylistic visions clamored to social media to pay tribute to the imaginative, forward-thinking purveyor of timeless aesthetics.
