Roland took advantage of its own unofficial holiday, 808 Day (aptly celebrated Aug. 8), to announce the release of three new affordable versions of legendary studio staples: the TR-808 drum machine, SP-404 Sampler and SH-101 synth.

The most recognizable refresh to music producers everywhere, the new TR-08 Rhythm Composer is based on the classic TR-808, boasting a similar look and feel, plus additional sequencing and effects features. This piece is packed with iconic sounds that are instantly recognizable to producers and fans alike, including those that have been featured on innumerable hits from Prince and Marvin Gaye to 808 Mafia and Jamie XX. Kanye West even centered an entire album around the machine's capabilities with 2008's 808s & Heartbreak.

"This is amazing," former Recording Academy Chair and GRAMMY-winning super-producer Jimmy Jam, "you've captured …  not only the sounds of the classic TR-808, but also the way this feels … the metal on here, the colors..."

Also, updated versions of the SH-101 synth and SP-404 sampler give producers the tactile experience of go-to studio pieces with expanded modern capabilities.

"In this era of everything being USB, and obviously portability and the processing power that we have currently," explains Principleasure, a self-described 'backward technologist' and music producer. "It's really important to be able to integrate classic instruments or classic sounds into the modern setup."
