(The following song list is featured in "The Vegas Issue" of GRAMMY magazine. Read the issue, in a new reader-friendly format, here.)
As the saying goes, "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas." But is this really true? After all, many songs have been written about Sin City — some glorify its neon-flashing lights (Elvis Presley's "Viva Las Vegas"), while others see a darker side to the city (Sheryl Crow's "Leaving Las Vegas"). And then there are those who just want to win (AC/DC's "Sin City"). Win or lose, love it or hate it, it seems everyone has something to say about Vegas. But what are they actually saying? Let's roll a seven (songs) and find out.
AC/DC
"Sin City"
Viva Las Vegas?
Only if they win in Sin City, which AC/DC are confident they'll do
Chances of winning?
They've got their sights set high
Better off somewhere else?
There's always the highway to hell
Best gambling metaphor:
"I'm gonna roll you baby"
Sheryl Crow
"Leaving Las Vegas"
Viva Las Vegas?
Only if she can drive out to Barstow for the night
Chances of winning?
Slim. Las Vegas has her on a losing streak — no joker, no jack and no king
Better off somewhere else?
Maybe Mississippi … but then again, she stayed there a day too long
Best gambling metaphor:
"I check the odds and I place my bet"
Faith Hill
"Let's Go To Vegas"
Viva Las Vegas?
When it comes to getting hitched, Hill's got bright Vegas lights in her eyes
Chances of winning?
At love? High, she's ready to "kiss the single life goodbye"
Better off somewhere else?
Maybe after the Mexican divorce
Best gambling metaphor:
"[Let's] bet on love and let it ride"
Buck Owens
"Big In Vegas"
Viva Las Vegas?
With a strong will and big dreams, Owens is determined to viva in Vegas
Chances of winning?
He's not giving up until his name is in lights, but still doubtful
Better off somewhere else?
Never thought we'd say this, but Bakersfield?
Best gambling metaphor:
He'll take a standing ovation over hitting the jackpot any day
Gram Parsons
"Ooh Las Vegas"
Viva Las Vegas?
For Parsons, it's more like muerte en Las Vegas
Chances of winning?
Slim, even if the queen of spades was his friend
Better off somewhere else?
Maybe at a $1,000 wedding, which he could probably have in Vegas
Best gambling metaphor:
"The queen of hearts is a b****"
Katy Perry
"Waking Up In Vegas"
Viva Las Vegas?
Perry doesn't remember
Chances of winning?
Not great. She lost her motel key and her I.D., and she's broke
Better off somewhere else?
California, where it's warm, wild, fine, fresh, and fierce
Best gambling metaphor:
No time for metaphors. Perry is trying to get the hell outta Vegas
Elvis Presley
"Viva Las Vegas"
Viva Las Vegas?
Um … duh
Chances of winning?
High. He's got a whole lot of money ready to burn
Better off somewhere else?
Nowhere is better than Las Vegas, except maybe the promised land
Best gambling metaphor:
Shockingly, there are none
