The French composer emerged as the winner for Music (Original Score) for his work on The Shape Of Water at the 90th Academy Awards on March 4 in Los Angeles. Desplat bested a talented field, which comprised Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood (Phantom Thread), top GRAMMY winner John Williams (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), Hans Zimmer (Dunkirk), and Carter Burwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).

"Guillermo, thank you for letting music be the voice of your characters and convey the beautiful melancholy of love. That's for you," Desplat said during his acceptance speech, motioning to the film's director, Guillermo del Toro.

Desplat's win marked one of four in total for The Shape Of Water, which also ended up capturing Best Picture, Best Director, Directing, and Best Original Score.

Desplat had previously won an Oscar for his work on The Grand Budapest Hotel. He also earned a 2014 GRAMMY for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media for his work on the Wes Anderson film. His first GRAMMY win came in the same category for 2011 for The King's Speech.
