Today, indie-pop stalwarts and GRAMMY nominees Tegan and Sara gave their fans something to freak out about (especially those who drove to school blasting "Walking With A Ghost" from their CD copy of the duo's 2004 breakout album, So Jealous). The twin sisters' ninth studio album, Hey, I'm Just Like You, is due out Sept. 27 and will consist completely of music they wrote as high schoolers.
The album will come three days after their previously announced debut memoir, High School, is released. The new music comes from a discovery they made while working on the book, a treasure trove of lost tapes of the first music they wrote as teens.
"This is the record we never could have made as teenagers, full of songs we never could have written as adults," Tegan and Sara wrote in a press release.

The forthcoming LP will be their first release since 2016's Love You To Death and will offer a return to their "rock and punk roots, with a punch of pop production," the press release explains. "Defiant and melodramatic, the songs capture the exultation and grief of first loves, first losses, ecstatic kiss-offs and psychedelic tributes to friendship."

"While working on our memoir, we discovered lost cassette tapes that had been unheard for over 20 years," Tegan wrote in the release. "They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17…we immediately recognized the songs as an essential part of our high school story."
Sara noted that it was important to them to stay true to the core of those early works. "With only minor tweaks to lyrics and structure, we tried to remain true to the original essence of each song," she added.
It is the first time the sisters, who have both openly identified as queer since their musical beginnings, have worked with an all-female team on an album. The creative crew included producer Alex Hope (who has also worked with Troye Sivan), engineer Rachael Findlen, GRAMMY winners Beatriz Artola (mixing) and Emily Lazar (mastering), as well as Annie Kennedy (assistant engineer), Carla Azar (drums) and Catherine Hiltz (bass).
