What can't Nomi Ruiz do? The Nuyorican powerhouse is a singer/songwriter, actress and essayist who has performed with nu-disco group Hercules & Love Affair, acted in the revered TV show "Mayans M.C.," and written essays on gender, sexuality and inclusivity for Jezebel and The Fader, to name a few things.
"What made me want to be an artist is that ... it was innately in me. I've been singing since I was a kid and writing songs at a very young age. It was sort of a way for me to escape within myself and eventually gave me the means to escape outside as well and see the world and connect with other people," Ruiz recently told GRAMMY.com. Hear more from her in the video below.
Catch Ruiz's performance, as well as performances from many others, at the second annual TRANScendent Sounds Festival, GRAMMY.com's online music festival putting the spotlight on a diverse roster of transgender music artists, airing this Saturday, June 26, at 3 p.m. ET / noon PT on GRAMMY.com and the Recording Academy's YouTube channel and Facebook page.
