Singer/songwriter/producer Mike Posner recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's The Drop series. In an exclusive interview, Posner discussed how he wanted listeners to experience his latest album, At Night, Alone., and why he's not interested in repeatedly creating the same type of music, among other topics. He also performed a brief set, including his hit "I Took A Pill In Ibiza."
"In my short career, I tend not to repeat myself. I have no interest in redoing something," said Posner. "Sometimes that makes people angry and maybe it's not the best thing for me commercially. But it's the best thing for me artistically and it's the best thing for my heart."
Detroit native Posner recorded his first independent album as a senior in high school, netting a profit of $1,700. While interning at a local radio station, he met rapper Big Sean, with whom he collaborated and formed a friendship. Posner attended Duke University in Durham, N.C., balancing his studies with making mixtapes such as 2009's A Matter Of Time and writing songs. His work caught the attention of Clive Davis’ J Records, which signed Posner following his junior year at Duke.
In 2010 Posner released his major label debut album, 31 Minutes To Takeoff, which featured the Top 10 hit "Cooler Than Me" and Top 20 hit "Please Don't Go." He subsequently issued singles such as 2013's "Top Of The World" featuring Big Sean, and co-wrote songs for other artists, including Justin Bieber's No. 2 hit "Boyfriend" and Maroon 5's GRAMMY-nominated hit "Sugar."
Now signed to Island Records, Posner released his sophomore album, At Night. Alone., in May. Featuring 18 tracks, including the Top 5 hit "I Took A Pill In Ibiza," "Be As You Are," "In The Arms Of A Stranger," and "Buried In Detroit" (Lucas Löwe Remix) featuring Big Sean, the album reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200.
