GRAMMY-winning singer/songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's The Drop series. In an exclusive interview, Rae discussed the meaning behind her latest album, The Heart Speaks In Whispers, and why she believes it's important for people to listen to their "inner voice," among other topics. She also performed a brief set, including "Green Aphrodisiac."
"I liked … just getting really still and really quiet, and sort of interpreting what was coming in from my heart," said Rae regarding the making of The Heart Speaks In Whispers. "The record is about all of us tuning into ourselves and respecting our own voice."
Leeds, England, native Rae released her self-titled debut album in 2006. The album topped the U.K. album chart, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and earned Rae three GRAMMY nominations: Song and Record Of The Year for "Put Your Records On" and Best New Artist. The following year, she took home her first career GRAMMY for Album Of The Year as a featured artist on Herbie Hancock's River: The Joni Letters.
In 2010 Rae released her sophomore album, The Sea, which peaked at No. 7 on the strength of the GRAMMY-nominated hit "Like A Star." She followed with 2011's The Love EP, which featured five covers, including Prince's "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and Bob Marley's "This Is Love." The latter rendition earned Rae a GRAMMY for Best R&B Performance at the 54th GRAMMY Awards.
Released in May, The Heart Speaks In Whispers features 12 tracks, including "Green Aphrodisiac," "Horse Print Dress," "Been To The Moon," and "The Skies Will Break."
Rae is currently on an international tour with dates scheduled through October.
