Banjo instrumentalist Noam Pikelny and mandolinist Chris Thile, who assembled the band, are two of the bluegrass quintet Punch Brothers. In an extended interview at Pilgrimage Music Festival 2015, they described their diverse musical influences to the Memphis Chapter. "The listening parties on the bus are really fun," said Pikelny. Influences can range from Radiohead to Buck Owens, but bluegrass is always what Thile calls the band's "palette" of musical colors to choose from. They also spoke about the initial connection that brought them together as a band, their recording process, and their unique approach to improvisation. "It's more important to serve the song than to serve our own interests to be playing or to be improvising," said Pikelny.
