At Sasquatch 2013, the Pacific Northwest Chapter heard from married couple Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst about their life on the road as the duo Shovels & Rope, including their performance on David Letterman's talk show. "Our songwriting process, it changes every time," said Hearst. "Every opportunity that we have to write, depending on who's driving, that person who is not manning the wheel has the power of the pen to the paper. I think that person in the passenger [seat] gets an advantage in the songwriting. But you know we switch up enough that the balance of power is nice and even." Trent emphasizes how day to day writing is inspired by their travels together. "We write a lot of songs about places that we go," he said, "songs about everywhere."
