The War On Drugs Announce First Annual Holiday Benefit Shows

GRAMMY-winning psych-rock group The War on Drugs recently announced they will be celebrating the holidays at home this year with their Philadelphia-based fans, who have the chance to see them perform during three special benefit shows Dec.19-21.

The group is coyly calling the shows the "First Annual 'Drug-cember To Remember,'" and will be donating its proceeds to The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia, a local non-profit supporting the city's public schools. From each $41 ticket, $1 will be contributed to the cause, which will be tripled with donation matching from three other organizations. Fans can feel good about supporting their local community and may be treated to what the band is calling "some big surprises."

The band completed a limited run of U.S. concert dates this September and will play several shows across Europe in December before returning to the states for the Philadelphia shows. In 2017 the group toured North America and Europe in support of their latest album, A Deeper Understanding. This LP, the group's fourth, earned them their first GRAMMY win for Best Rock Album at the 60th GRAMMY Awards.

The group found inspiration in Los Angeles, where they recorded A Deeper Understanding. Frontman Adam Granduciel explained to the Recording Academy why they opted for the change of scenery, as they wanted to put themselves in a city that had shaped some of their biggest influences, including Neil Young, who they would later meet in L.A.

"I would always think of an L.A. record as 'sunny' or something, but then I started thinking, 'Well, my favorite records that were made here are dark and sad and lonely.' I never really lived here before, so I didn't really think I understood," Granduciel said.
