Biography

"If I don't terrorize, I'm not Pop."

  • Born James Newell Osterberg Jr. on April 21, 1947, in Muskegon, Michigan

  • Iggy Pop rose to fame as frontman of the Stooges, whose 1969 self-titled debut featured the proto-punk anthem "I Wanna Be Your Dog." After the group disbanded, Pop achieved critical acclaim with a pair of David Bowie-produced solo albums, The Idiot and Lust For Life, which spawned well-known songs such as "The Passenger."

  • The song "Cold Metal" secured Pop his first GRAMMY nomination for 1988 for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance.

  • Did you know? Pop's stage name originates from his time as the drummer in his first band, the Iguanas.

  • In 2016 the GRAMMY Museum hosted a conversation with Pop and Josh Homme, who produced Pop's GRAMMY-nominated Post Pop Depression album.

  • In 2014 Pop designed a custom guitar for an auction benefitting War Child USA, a nonprofit organization helping to support war-affected children globally through local and international initiatives.
