Each of The Recording Academy's 12 Chapters will host a cohesive program of marquee events called The Recording Academy Honors, it was announced by Recording Academy President Neil Portnow. The Recording Academy Honors Award acknowledges those whose outstanding achievements and contributions have significantly enriched the music community and the community at large.
"The Recording Academy is committed to creating a positive impact in the music community in a variety of ways throughout our 12 Chapters," said Portnow. "The Recording Academy Honors will pay tribute to those local musicians and industry leaders who have been recognized as an invaluable asset to the music community while supporting philanthropic programs on local and national levels."
The event launched with the Pacific Northwest Chapter on Sept. 24 honoring the Kingsmen, Katie Becker, Julian Priester, and Sub Pop Records, which included great performances by Herbie Hancock, the Kingsmen, Julian Priester, Smoosh, and Kinski. Other scheduled events include the Memphis Chapter on Oct. 22 honoring Craig Brewer, Issac Hayes, David Porter, Justin Timberlake, and radio station WDIA with a special presentation by Jimmy Jam and Lisa Marie Presley; and the Nashville Chapter on Nov. 7 honoring Alison Krauss, Tim McGraw, Earl Scruggs, and BeBe and CeCe Winans with special presentations and performances by T-Bone Burnett, Gladys Knight, Ruben Studdard and many more. Remaining Chapters will announce dates and honorees at a later time.
The introduction of The Recording Academy Honors brings unity to each Chapter's most noteworthy event while maintaining the regional flavor of the local community. Recipients of the award are selected in recognition of the excellence and integrity embodied in their work, as well as their willingness to support and participate in programs benefiting the music community. The Honors Award becomes the highest accolade bestowed at the Chapter level and the premier local fund-raising event. Proceeds from the events will go toward music education and professional development programs in each respective Chapter city.
